About Liverpool

Initially owing its growth to its position as a bustling port, Liverpool has, since the decline of the shipbuilding industry, taken the mantle of being the home of The Beatles, and two of the most famous football clubs in the country. However pop music and football are but two of the many attractions which Liverpool has to offer the visitor.

For example, Liverpool is also home to two cathedrals, the Liverpool Cathedral, the largest Anglican cathedral in Britain, and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, the ultra modern Catholic cathedral close by. Elsewhere, the Albert Dock is another famous attraction, containing scores of speciality shops, restaurants and bars as well as The Beatles Story, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the Museum of Liverpool Life and The Merseyside Tate Gallery.
Liverpool is famous for the selection of arts and entertainment available, Beatles fans can enjoy a tour of buildings and venues connected with the fab four, while institutes such as the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts offer the opportunity to experience new contemporary music and drama. For those who wish to sample a mixture of classical and popular theatre a visit to the Liverpool Playhouse and Studio is recommended, this boasts of being the oldest continuing repertory theatre in Britain. Liverpool is also full of pubs, clubs, cafes, bars and music venues.
For visitors who need a change of pace Liverpool has ample open spaces and parkland to relax in. Some of the more popular parks are: Calderstones Park which contains old English and Japanese Gardens; Clarke Gardens, complete with a pets corner; Greenbank Park and Otterspool Park, which offer spectacular views across the Mersey.

Throughout the year Liverpool hosts an extensive range of special events such as: the Mersey River Festival; the Royal Philharmonic Summer Pops and the annual International Beatles week which attracts bands and fans from all over the world.
